Tewkesbury Borough Council’s chief executive is planning to step down from the job after 12 years in the role.

Mike Dawson, who is planning to retire, will leave the local authority on June 30 next year, bringing his career within local government to an end after nearly half a century.

Since joining the Gloucestershire council in 2009, Mr Dawson has helped to "transform" it, driving investment and growth, the local authority said.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as the chief executive of Tewkesbury Borough Council, a role to which I was very pleased to be appointed in 2009 and can honestly say that it has been an honour and a privilege to fulfil," Mr Dawson said.

“The role of chief executive at Tewkesbury Borough Council is a challenging one and I would like to think that I have undertaken the role to the council’s satisfaction over the past 12 years. I am very proud indeed of the achievements we have made in that time."

Mr Dawson said he was not "completely closing" his working career, but the "time had come" for him to step away from the role.

"I do look forward to spending more time with my family and exploring interests outside of work," he added.

Over the next seven months, Mr Dawson will continue in his role as chief executive, and will support the council in its efforts to appoint a replacement for the post.
