A new hi-tech research facility at Swansea University has been given the green light.
It follows a 拢30m investment from the 海角视频 Government鈥檚 海角视频 Research Partnership Investment Fund (海角视频RPIF) to build a new Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials.
The funding has been confirmed by 海角视频 Government Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation Chris Skidmore.
The new facility will enable academics from across Wales to conduct ground-breaking research into the technology which is found in the devices we all use every day, including smartphones and sat-navs.
Based at the university鈥檚 Bay Campus, the centre is expected to be completed in the first half of 2021.
The investment is part of the sixth round of 海角视频RPIF funding, totalling over 拢721m across 11 projects in the 海角视频.
聽As part of the 海角视频 Government鈥檚 Industrial Strategy, the funding includes 拢221m from 海角视频RPIF and over 拢500m of investment from businesses, charities and philanthropic donors.
Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns said : 鈥淪wansea University鈥檚 successful bid is a testament to its world class education and cements Wales鈥 position as a global leader in compound semi-conductor research.
鈥淭he potential for compound semiconductors to help challenge the key challenges outlined in the 海角视频 Government鈥檚 Industrial Strategy has never been greater. I am therefore thrilled that Swansea has been selected to drive forward this research and play a vital role in making the 海角视频 the most innovative country in the world.鈥
In earlier rounds of 海角视频RPIF, 拢680m of capital investment from the 海角视频 Government has leveraged over 拢1.75bn in聽 private co-investment from businesses, charities and donors into pioneering university research and development facilities.
海角视频 Research and Innovation chief executive, Professor Sir Mark Walport, said: 鈥淓nsuring our researchers and innovators have the infrastructure they need is essential to creating knowledge and delivering life-changing advances.
"From tackling cancer and heart disease to improving transport and managing vital water resources, the 海角视频 Research Investment Fund will deliver 11 new world leading university facilities to support discovery and translation.鈥
