StudioCanal-owned TV shows maker posts highest profits since 2016

The production company has made the likes of It's a Sin, Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax

Profits have hit their highest level at the maker of TV shows such as It's a Sin, Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax since 2016, it has been revealed.

Red Production Company, which is based in Greater Manchester, has reported pre-tax profits of £3.4m for 2021, up from £1.1m in 2020. It's the highest total since the £3.7m it achieved in 2016.

In newly-filed accounts with Companies House, the business said its financial performance can "fluctuate" depending on how many TV shows are commissioned and produced.

Red Production Company is owned by StudioCanal and has also been behind shows including Years and Years, The Stranger and Casanova.

The firm's latest accounts also show its turnover increased from £5.4m to £7.5m in 2021.

A statement signed off by the board said: "Financial performance can fluctuate depending on the number of TV programmes commissioned and produced in each trading period.

"All productions during the year were produced through special purpose vehicles rather than Red Production Company itself."

On its future, the company added: "The directors expect to continue the development of the company's business by producing television programmes that have a strong local and international appeal as well as benefitting from group synergies such as the international distribution channels."
