Companies in Bristol have the highest survival rate of anywhere in the Ƶ, new research has found.
Of the businesses founded in the city in 2013, 44.36 per cent were still operating after five years - up from the national average of 42.4 per cent - the research by business comparison website BusinessComparison.com revealed.
The success rate in Bristol was driven by an economy built on industries such as creative media, electronics and aerospace, according to the report.
The only other cities to show a higher survival rate than the national average were Brighton and Hove (44.1 per cent) and Leeds (42.9 per cent).
At the other end of the scale, Plymouth had the lowest startup survival rate, with fewer than one in three new ventures lasting five years or more.
The regions with the highest survival rate were all in the South of England, with the South West coming out on top with 45.6 per cent, followed by 44.7 per cent for the East of England and 44.6 per cent for the South East.

However, London bucked the trend in the South, with a survival rate of just 39.3 per cent - the lowest of any of the Ƶ’s regions.
Meanwhile, northern and Scottish businesses found it harder to make it past five years, with 41.9 per cent surviving in the North West, 41.7 per cent in Scotland and 41.1 per cent in the North East.
The research, which was backed by Office for National Statistics figures, also looked at which industries had the best survival rate.
The most successful sectors included drinks manufacturers (53 per cent), residential care (52 per cent) and the creative arts and entertainment industry (52 per cent).
The industries which struggled the most to survive included insurance, clothes manufacturers and various niches within the mining sector.
