Businesses in Coventry and Warwickshire which trade overseas have been given a stark warning to prepare now for the final exit from the EU 鈥 deal or no deal.
The advice came during a video call with the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce鈥檚 Brexit Club which included experts from the Department for International Trade (DIT) and the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) as well as businesses at the sharp end of import and export.
Ian Harrison, head of exports (Midlands) at the DIT and Dan Dalton, former MEP and now CEO of the BCC in the EU/Belgium, both expressed confidence a deal could be done between the 海角视频 and EU before the transition period comes to an end on the final day of 2020.
But export expert David Hooper, of Independent Freight and Hooper & Co, said firms should not be putting off preparations for when and if a deal is agreed.
He said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not like we can say that there鈥檚 still four years to go so you can 鈥榳ait and see鈥 鈥 this is happening in six months and you need to be ready.
鈥淎 deal might make things better from the point of view of tariffs but we鈥檙e leaving the Customs Union and we鈥檙e leaving the single market which impacts all goods that will go across to the EU.
鈥淭hat means suddenly 200 million more customs declarations per year must be filled in. It won鈥檛 be a case of simply loading a truck and sending it off to the EU, it will need two days鈥 preparation because if the paperwork isn鈥檛 done, those goods aren鈥檛 going to reach the customer.鈥
Mr Hooper added: 鈥淓qually, if you trade with other countries outside of the EU, this may still affect you too because you might be trading on terms that have come about because of a free trade agreement through the EU.
鈥淚f it鈥檚 no deal, then those FTAs expire on January 1, 2021, and the origin of your product suddenly becomes vital.
鈥淭here are many other factors to consider and there鈥檚 six months to get everything in order and, while we鈥檇 welcome a deal, it won鈥檛 mean that everything carries on normal so my advice to business is to be prepared.
鈥淚 understand that we鈥檝e all been dealing with the Covid-19 crisis but the Brexit issue hasn鈥檛 gone away. If anything, it鈥檚 just reduced the time we have to get ready.鈥
During the call it was revealed that the 海角视频 is in talks with the USA, Japan and Australia/New Zealand on free trade agreements.
Ajay Desai, international trade director at the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said firms should get in touch with the chamber鈥檚 international trade advisers for support regarding all overseas trade, including with the EU.
He said: 鈥淲e were grateful for all of the contributions and it鈥檚 vitally important that businesses gear up for what鈥檚 happening with regards to our future relationship with the EU and with how the world starts to emerge from the Covid-19 crisis.
