SMEs 'thriving in the West Midlands' says new data

Research of Office for National Statistics figures suggests the small business sector is on the up in the West Midlands

Small- and medium-sized businesses are thriving in the West Midlands, according to new research.

Analysis shows the number of businesses with between five and 249 employees in the region hit a record high in 2018.

According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, there were 22,715 SMEs in our region last year, up from 22,515 in 2017 and the highest number since figures began in 2010, when there were 19,125 SMEs.

Across the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ, there were 274,420 SMEs in 2018 which was the highest number recorded since at least 2010.

The number of SMEs in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ has been rising steadily since 2011 and is up from 230,130 in 2010.

According to a recent research by the Economic and Social Research Council, SMEs contribute 47 per cent of revenue to the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ economy and have a key role in boosting º£½ÇÊÓÆµ productivity.

According to the latest small business survey by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, 40 per cent of medium-sized businesses said they had increased their number of employees between 2017 and 2018.
