ASOS and JD distributor secures £8.5m to expand internationally

The Bristol headquartered firm distributes major brands as well as its own skateboards, scooters and roller skates

Bristol based action sports distributor Shiner has secured a six-figure funding package from HSBC º£½ÇÊÓƵ

A Bristol lifestyle and sports distributor founded 85 years ago has secured £8.5m and is planning to use the funding to grow internationally.

Shiner, a third-generation business in Almondsbury, manufactures and distributes goods and equipment including clothing, roller skates, skateboards and protective gear for brands including JD, ASOS, Skatehut, Surfdome and Decathlon.

The company recently expanded into the US and Europe, and has offices and warehouses in California and the Netherlands. It agreed the package with HSBC º£½ÇÊÓƵ for its Dutch-based subsidiary.

The cash injection will help the business grow into the European market post-Brexit, according to Shiner managing director Charlie Allen.

He said it was a “hugely exciting” time for the company, which has doubled its turnover in the last 18 months.

“Action sports are becoming more popular than ever, with a significant increase in people participating in skateboarding across the globe since the pandemic began and great exposure through the Olympics,” he said.

“It’s a great time for us to expand and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our HSBC º£½ÇÊÓƵ relationship manager, David Skyrme, who ensured the process ran seamlessly.”

As well as distributing international brands, Shiner also has its own branded products, such as skateboards, scooters and roller skates, all designed in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ from its Bristol headquarters.
