Today marks the culmination of our annual rundown of the Top 500 companies in the East Midlands with the publication of our Top 20 list. Between them those companies 鈥 a combination of retailers, car dealers, builders, digger builders, engineering giants, sandwich makers, recruitment companies and car manufacturers 鈥 had combined annual revenues of 拢43.6 billion.

Because the stats used are based on Companies House accounts covering July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021, that overall figure is a direct reflection of the impact of Covid-19 on the 海角视频 economy. The previous year鈥檚 overall revenues for the Top 20, by comparison, were 拢50 billion.

For the fourth year, Nottingham鈥檚 Boots 海角视频 is the number one company in the East Midlands 鈥 but saw its turnover fell to 拢7.8 billion in the year to August 31, 2020 from 拢8.7 billion the year before.

Although it saw a big drop in sales, its most recent trading update showed a welcome boost over the latest three months thanks to shoppers snapping up own label products in a bid to get better value 鈥 and shopping online.

The annual list was once again put together by De Montfort University Professor of Enterprise Prof David Rae, in a partnership between the business schools at the De Montfort, Derby and Nottingham Trent universities, supported by East Midlands Chamber.

This year our rundown is sponsored by NatWest Group and Leicester property developer and landlord Bradgate Estates.

In his report into the findings Prof Rae said: 鈥淟ooking first at the Top 10 businesses in the 2023 table, it reflects a continuing concentration in their business sectors.

鈥淒unelm Group is the sole new entrant, having increased turnover by a remarkable 拢278 million, and as a retailer, joins Boots, Frasers Group, NEXT and Wilkinsons in making up half of the Top 10.

鈥淭he automotive sector is next, with Sytner Group and Pendragon as major dealership groups and Toyota as a manufacturer.

鈥淔inally, Barratt and Bloor as major housebuilding companies complete the Top 10, and these were the only other firms whose turnover, based on house sales, increased during the year.

鈥淭he companies in the 11-30 grouping reflect a wider range of business activities.

鈥淭he strength of the housebuilding and construction materials sectors remain evident with 5 companies.

鈥淭he manufacturing sector, led by Bombardier and then Rolls-Royce group of companies and Vaillant Group as significant businesses are more evident, also including the food manufacturing sector, Samworth Brothers and Refresco.

鈥淢ajor business service and finance organisation retain high positions, as do a range of retailers including Games Workshop which rose 20 places, Watches of Switzerland and Crown Crest Group, which owns the Poundstretcher and Bargain Buys brands.鈥
