Plymouth to stage literature and arts festival pilot ahead of major event

The Lost Time event will test the water for whether Plymouth could sustain a large-scale literature and arts festival

The mini Lost Time Festival will test the market for a major literary and arts festival to be held in Plymouth

Plymouth is to stage a mini literary and arts festival which if successful could mean the city hosting a major event.

The Lost Time pilot event is scheduled to take place from April 29 to May 2, 2021, and will test the water to see if .

Independent researcher Caitlin Brawn has been working on a feasibility study looking at the city’s appetite for, and capacity to stage, such an event.

Funded by the Plymouth Octopus Project, Caitlin is also working with city arts organisations including Wonder Zoo, Imperfect Cinema and Soap Box Culture, on the project.

The Lost Time pilot will be followed by another in August, which it is hoped will involve live acts, and both pilots are designed to lay the groundwork for a future city-wide festival called Storyteller, involving a range of art forms but all based around the theme of “word”.

Caitlin has been in contact with arts and literature organisations throughout the city, including organisers of previous events such as PlymLit and the Plymouth International Book Festival.

“I will bring my findings together and it will be decided whether there is potential for a festival,” said Caitlin, but added: “There is definitely an appetite for this. I have spoken to a range of stakeholders in the arts and cultural sector and there is space for something worth celebrating Plymouth, and shouting about variety and diversity.”

The Lost Time pilot will feature four events over four days, beginning with a hybrid live/online literary night on April 29, from 7.30pm.
