A Plymouth-based direct mail marketing company has pledged to go beyond carbon neutrality and actually put more into the environment than it takes out.

has launched its Planet Positive Initiative, an ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) commitment to remove more C02 from the atmosphere than it emits.

The initiative is about “going beyond offsetting, neutralising, or balancing” C02 emissions and seeks to create a sustainable business that gives back more than it consumes, with a focus on “planet, people and profit”.

“You can’t have a sustainable business without a focus on the planet, people and profit,” said Jake Whitford, operations director. “We are aiming to create a company that has a net positive impact on the environment, society and the economy.”

The º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government has set ambitious targets to cut emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. This would bring the º£½ÇÊÓƵ more than three-quarters of the way to net zero by 2050.

To support this ambition, Pepper has partnered with the World Land Trust, and will use the trust’s methodology to measure and reduce, before offsetting its residual emissions by investing in the protection and restoration of tropical habitats.

Pepper’s production hub, based at Langage Science Park in Plymouth, has also identified key environmental principles around the circular economy, renewable clean energy and lean direct mail practices.

“We’ve always placed a focus on our environmental initiatives, so whilst it has taken a huge effort, going net positive has been a natural progression,” said Saul Whitford, marketing director. “When the pandemic hit, we took the opportunity to reassess our practices and build-back-better to further embrace the green revolution.
