Workers at a Salford-based communications company say they have been left anxious about their prospects after the 'completely unexpected' news that hundreds of roles are at risk at Platform X Communications (PXC).
Some 350 positions are at risk at PXC, which is part of the TalkTalk Group, after a 'major restructuring' of operations.
The wholesale division of the company, which delivers services and broadband to other telecommunications providers, is also anticipated to create around 70 fresh positions.
The cuts will impact staff throughout the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, including at the company's head office at the Soapworks on Salford Quays, with those affected set to leave the company by this November.
A worker that they were notified they might lose their positions last week.
"They told me last week," he continued. "I'm not too worried at the moment because I've got time to look for something else."
Additional sources spoke to revealed there were concerns amongst personnel that operations would be relocated outside the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.
One, who requested anonymity, said his partner had been impacted by the reductions at the Salford facility.
"She was told last week," he said. "It's all still under consultation but she was told her role would be finishing by October, November time.
"It was completely unexpected, everyone just got called in one by one. It's colleagues that have been there since day one of the business: 20 or 25 years.
"I do not think a reason has been given as to why, it is part of trying to keep the business afloat. They had a reorganisation last Christmas to try and stabilise it then.
"With it being a Manchester business, a lot of people have relocated to the North West when they moved up here. There'll be a lot of people looking for roles now."
The redundancies were initially reported last Thursday (September 18) by industry publication ISPreview.
Several staff members posted on LinkedIn confirming their job losses on the same day.
"I never thought I would actually be writing this," one employee shared. "After 23 years, my role is being made redundant."
The telecommunications company, recognised as one of Salford's largest and most prominent private sector employers, relocated from London to Salford in 2019.
The firm divided its core operations into three distinct entities in 2023. These comprised TalkTalk Consumer, serving over two million broadband subscribers; business services division TalkTalk Business Direct; and PXC, providing solutions to fellow telecommunications operators.
Sky News reported over the weekend that TalkTalk was exploring a potential break-up, involving separate disposals of PXC and its flagship consumer broadband division. A spokesperson for PXC said: "PXC continuously reviews its operations to ensure it remains efficient and dynamic in an evolving marketplace.
"The company's ongoing focus is on rolling out new product innovation and delivering exceptional service for its partners."
This follows a series of job reductions last year. It that nearly a quarter of TalkTalk's consumer team were at risk of redundancy.
