The places that still can't open from May 17 and the next key dates

Monday May 17 marks the biggest opening up of society so far this year - but spare a thought for those businesses and events that will remain off-limits

Revellers at the Circus Nightclub at Bramley-Moore Dock, Liverpool, for a Covid safety pilot event attended by around 3000 people at the indoor venue. Researchers at the event will gather evidence for the Events Research Programme (ERP) on how small and large-scale events could be permitted to safely reopen.

Nightclubs have been the hardest hit by the repeated lockdowns in England. With a cap on social gatherings and indoor meetings - the nature of the nightclub has left it off limits for longest under the lockdown easing roadmap.

While bars, restaurants, theatres and casinos re-opened again from Monday, May 17, nightclubs and adult entertainment venues will stay closed for another month until June 21.at least.

It is hoped that that key date will also signal the end of limits on wedding and event sizes which stand at 30 outdoors and the rule-of-six inside.

June 21 is expected to be the fourth and final step of the lockdown easing roadmap, but concern about the spread of the Indian variant of Covid-19 has cast some doubt about whether that milestone will be met.

The Government plans to lift “all legal limits on social contact”, meaning people will be allowed to gather in groups of any size, both indoors and outdoors.

But it is expected that some social distancing measures may stay in place may remain and we don't yet know whether the wearing of masks will be essential indoors.

What happens next?

The return of nightclubs and large venues will depend o the results of a scientific events research programme which is currently taking place.
