Gateshead's Access Training has appointed two new directors to support it through an expected period of significant growth.

Tim Pain and Andrea Walters have been appointed to the firm's senior management team, serving alongside their roles at The University of Sunderland where Tim is director of innovation and Andrea is chief operating officer. Access was acquired by The university earlier this year.

The pair will work with Access Training's managing director, David Armstrong, and director of training, Sharon Wallace, on strategic planning for the business and as conduits between the business and the university.

Mr Armstrong said: "Having Tim and Andrea on our senior management team will have a profound positive impact on the company going forward. They bring strengths in commercial and funded contracts and the wider education landscape as well as HR, legal, governance and operations expertise. All of which will help us to navigate our way through the change and expansion anticipated, following our buy-out by the University.”

Real estate advisor Avison Young has promoted Helen Ewles to interim regional head of real estate management for the North East and Scotland.

Ms Ewles has worked for Avison Young for nearly 17 years, starting in the National Inspection Team supporting the Property Management Department. She became part of the property management team within the Newcastle REM surveying team in 2019.

She has worked on the East Pilgrim Street redevelopment in Newcastle and managed the Taras Properties portfolio guiding the team in securing vacant possession for redevelopment on the plot now being developed as Pilgrim’s Quarter, the future home of HMRC in the North East. And she has contributed to the construction and management strategy for Bank House.

Silverstone Building Consultancy has appointed Jade Cutmore as graduate surveyor.

Chartered surveying and construction management firm Silverstone Building Consultancy has appointed a graduate surveyor at its Newcastle office.

Jade Cutmore's appointment brings the company's headcount to 16 people across its Newcastle, Leeds and London bases. Ms Cutmore has a BSc Hons degree in Building Surveying from Northumbria University and will be working towards her RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) at Silverstone. She is currently assisting on dilapidations surveys, building and site surveys, schedules of conditions, reinstate cost assessments and investigating defects within buildings.

She will go on to assist the management of commercial property construction projects, including new-builds, extensions and fit-outs.

Ms Cutmore said: “I feel extremely privileged and proud to gain my first experience within the industry with Silverstone which is well-respected and has some high-profile clients. From the first contact, the team instantly made me feel at ease and welcomed. I’m grateful for the opportunity to start my career and expand my knowledge.”

Professional services firm EY's Newcastle office has recruited 35 students so far this year, including 18 graduates and 17 school leavers, as well as paid work experience for seven young people.

The Tyneside appointments came as EY recruited 2,400 people across the Ƶ. Since January, the firm has welcomed 1,600 graduates, school leavers and interns with almost half (46%) of this year’s new student intake in regional offices.

This year, EY also achieved an Ofsted rating of Outstanding across all aspects of its Level 7 Accountancy and Taxation Apprenticeship in England.

Peterlee's GEM Partnership has appointed a new director to its training operation.

Kelly Lee has been appointed training director having previously been training operations manager at the 40-strong firm since 2017.

Ms Lee said: “I am delighted to be taking up the role of Training Director, reinforcing GEM Partnership’s commitment to delivering the very best training services to our clients. I will be working with the team to drive our strategic priorities and boost operational excellence as we look to further develop and grow the training arm of the business.

“Since joining the business in 2017, specifically to set up and manage GEM’s training division, I have been instrumental in some significant successes, including winning direct adult skills contracts, helping us secure a “Good” rating from Ofsted inspectors and our recent listing in Ward Hadaway’s Fastest 50 Awards for the North East.

Geotechnical and ground engineering specialist RWO has appointed a new senior executive and graduate on the back of strong demand.

Neil Jones has become an associate director in the firm's geotechnical department, in its Stokesley office, while Daniel Tansley has become a graduate geologist. Mr Jones brings 35 years' experience as a chartered engineer and geologist and will be responsible for the design and preparation of geotechnical design solutions for clients including national housebuilders, as well as new business development, reviewing reports and ensuring technical compliance.

Mr Tansley is a recent graduate of the University of South Wales and will work both in the field and the office under the supervision of senior staff. He will support in geohazard assessments, desk studies, site walk overs, planning, supervising and reporting on ground investigations and the preparation of specifications and reports.

Department head and director Chris Rudd said: “We are rapidly building an experienced and dedicated geotechnical team and Neil and Dan will be a big addition to this. Neil’s geotechnical design, industry experience and proven mentoring skills make him an invaluable addition to our exceptional team.
