One of Bristol's oldest charities has appointed the South West head of one of the Ƶ’s largest food non-profits as its new chief executive.
Julian Mines will join Bristol Charities at the beginning of May, to head up the organisation which provides opportunities and support through grants, housing and charitable projects in Bristol and South Wales.
Mr Mines has been chief executive of FairShare South West for the past five years, during which he has helped expand the surplus food redistribution group’s impact with local charities, schools and projects.
He joins Bristol Charities’ board as the organisation continues with plans to redevelop the The Vassall Centre site in Fishponds, which it acquired last year.
The group, whose history stretches back more than 600 years, is looking to build affordable homes for older people alongside work and meeting spaces for the facility’s current and potentially new tenants, as well as facilities for the wider community.
Mr Mines' predecessor Anne Anketell, who has led Bristol Charities for eight years. will continue to lead the team of architects, planners and the organisation’s trustees and partners working on The Vassall Centre project until her successor's arrival.
Bristol Charities said Ms Anketell would also continue to support through the public consultation process the plans, to ensure a “seamless transition”.

“Building on the incredible legacy of Bristol Charities work over many years, I am looking forward to working with the staff, trustees, and partners on the next phase of development in addressing some of the most critical social issues facing the city."
Richard Gore, chair of Bristol Charities' trustees, added: "Julian joins the charity at an exciting time in its evolution and I am sure that he will prove to be the ideal person to build on the charity's vision to support more people and build better and sustainable homes for older people in Bristol.
