Two North East businesses have triumphed on the national stage after being singled out for prizes at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Business Awards 2025.

The awards, now in their 22nd year, are one of the biggest events of the business calendar, shining a light on the role of º£½ÇÊÓƵ firms in delivering growth, prosperity and innovation. The North East Chamber of Commerce held its own awards event earlier this year, in which its winners went through to the national final.

Now, two of those companies - Southern Asset Management and Square One Law – have been named among just five national winners at the event. Both businesses will be recognised at a London Stock Exchange Market Close event on November 26, where the overall ‘winner of winners’ will also be announced.

Southern Asset Management won the Digital Revolution award, recognising its innovative use of technology to drive growth and efficiency, while Square One Law took home the People and Work award after impressing judges with its commitment to developing talent and fostering an inclusive workplace culture.

Established in 2022, Southern Asset Management, based in Stockton, has become a leading provider of high-quality structural testing and asset management services. It primarily tests steel lighting columns, high masts and other metallic assets.

Julie Burniston, head of communications and business development at Southern Asset Management, said: “We’re so proud to be flying the flag for the North East and showcasing the innovation that’s driving growth across our region.”

The People and Work Award category was to recognise businesses that prioritise diversity and inclusion, while recruiting, retraining and retaining a skilled workforce. Jesmond-based Square One Law, which started out as a start-up law firm 14 years ago, is now a certified B Corp business with experienced lawyers working across Newcastle, Leeds and Tees Valley.

Managing partner Gill Hunter said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been recognised nationally with the People and Work Award. As a values-driven and inclusive firm, this recognition reflects our commitment to fairness, integrity, and the courage to do the right thing.
