Universal has announced plans to open a new theme park in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, set to rival established attractions such as Alton Towers and Thorpe Park.

The US entertainment behemoth has secured the support of both the government and local council for the project, which will see a theme park and resort built in Bedford, as reported by .

The development is projected to create nearly 20,000 jobs during its construction phase, with an additional 8,000 roles across the hospitality and creative sectors upon its opening in 2031.

The government anticipates that around 80% of the theme park's workforce will be sourced from local areas.

Universal estimates that the site could contribute nearly £50bn to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ economy by 2055. The company also expects the site to attract 8.5 million visitors in its first year, potentially making it the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's largest visitor attraction.

This development will mark the first Universal-branded theme park and resort in Europe, forming part of a larger 476-acre entertainment resort complex.

For comparison, Thorpe Park spans 490 acres, while Alton Towers covers 550 acres.

Universal Destinations & Experiences' proposed plans also include a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining, and entertainment complex.
