New outdoor Christmas market to be held in Birmingham

Thirty craft, gin and drink stall are due to be set up in the grounds of city's cathedral as a boost to tourism economy

A new Christmas market will be held in the grounds of Birmingham Cathedral later this year

A Christmas market is to be held later this year in the grounds of Birmingham Cathedral.

Called Christmas in Cathedral Square, it is expected to host 30 craft, gift and drink stalls and will run from November 17 to December 19.

The event has been organised by the Colmore Business Improvement District in partnership with Birmingham City Council, the cathedral and funfair supplier Danter Attractions which will operate the event.

It is not a replacement for the Frankfurt Christmas Market which is held in Victoria Square and usually attracts five million visitors a year but was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The 2021 event is expected to go ahead after Birmingham City Council confirmed earlier this year that however no dates have so far been announced.

Colmore BID chief executive Michele Wilby said: "Christmas 2020 was not what anyone had planned.

"Interaction with family and friends was limited and many did not feel like it was a cause of celebration. For 2021, we want Christmas in Colmore Business District to be one to remember but for good reasons.
