Deborah Kermode will take over as chief executive of MAC Birmingham later this year

Arts and cultural centre has appointed a new chief executive and artistic director.

Deborah Kermode is currently deputy director of Ikon Gallery, in Brindleyplace, and will become only the seventh person in MAC's 54-year history to lead the venue in Cannon Hill Park when Dorothy Wilson steps down after 26 years.

Chairman Jonnie Turpie said: "The search to succeed Dorothy, who is such a significant leader in the cultural and arts industry, was always going to be a challenge.

"But after an international search, we are thrilled to appoint a leader with an outstanding knowledge and experience of this wonderful diverse and youthful city and with an ambitious vision for MAC's future."

Ms Kermode added: "As a long standing resident of Birmingham, I am passionate about the city's rich cultural and creative offer - qualities that MAC Birmingham proudly celebrates.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to join the talented team at one of Britain's most significant art centres and I look forward to playing a pivotal role in driving forward this ambitious organisation."

Ms Kermode will take up the role later this year.
