MoU paves way for US spaceplanes to land at Spaceport Cornwall

Newquay operation in collaboration with aerospace giant Sierra Space on plans for Dream Chaser to touchdown in duchy

Sierra Space's Dream Chaser spaceplane could soon be landing at Spaceport Cornwall

Spaceport Cornwall has signed an agreement with the US aerospace giant which could see its spaceplanes land at Newquay.

Bosses at the, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with American space company Sierra Nevada Corporation, which, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Sierra Space, makes the world’s only commercial spaceplane that can use a runway.

The two companies will now explore future collaboration, following the recent completion of a º£½ÇÊÓƵ Space Agency-funded study into how Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser spaceplane will operate.

The Dream Chaser is the world's only commercial spaceplane that can land at an airport or on a runway. It is designed to launch from a variety of vertical launch vehicles, fly to low-Earth orbit (LEO), and return to a spaceport or airport runway similar to any large commercial aeroplane.

The system is designed for multiple reuse, making it a more sustainable launch system with Dream Chaser being a multi-mission space utility vehicle, designed to transport cargo to LEO destinations such as the International Space Station.

The MoU means Sierra Space will use Spaceport Cornwall as a potential landing site/return location, planning missions with Cornwall following further collaboration.

Spaceport Cornwall and Sierra Space say they have a shared vision to “democratise space” - increasing space sector participation by lowering the cost of access to space and communicating the vital role satellites can play in combating some of the global climate challenges world leaders are currently discussing at G7.

The signing of the MoU follows discussions between the two companies during the past two years and follows the completion of the concept of operations (CONOPS) undertaken by Sierra Space regarding the suitability of Spaceport Cornwall to be a return location for Dream Chaser.
