An established Northern Ireland tyre business is creating 23 jobs at a new Newry factory aimed at adding a new service offering.

Modern Tyres is investing £5.6 million in an 81,000 square feet purpose-built facility in Carnbane Industrial Estate in the town.

The base will focus on tyre and rim assembly, an addition to its core business of tyre wholesaling and retailing.

The new roles – which include managerial roles, sales engineers, operatives, office staff and delivery drivers - will generate almost £650,000 in additional annual salaries and take headcount at the firm to over 200.

Known as Modern Wheel Solutions, the new division is designed to broaden its range of services to current and potential clients, Rory Byrne, Director of Modern Tyres, said.

“By improving efficiencies, we will be able to provide them with a complete end-to-end service,” he said. “Our new purpose-built manufacturing facility will allow our business to grow, and with more employees, we can capitalise on new opportunities in export markets.”

Invest NI has offered Modern Tyres over £580,000 towards the construction of its new factory, marketing activities and the creation of the 23 jobs. Jobs on offer include managerial roles, sales engineers, operatives, office staff and delivery drivers.

Kevin Holland, Invest Northern Ireland’s CEO, welcomed the announcement.
