Midlands childcare entrepreneur adds to portfolio with Liverpool acquisition

The acquisition means Shakila Ali's portfolio of businesses can now offer 170 full-time childcare places

The acquisition means the businesses can now offer 170 full-time childcare places

A childcare business is expanding its portfolio with the acquisition of a new day nursery.

Shakila Ali, who owns Stepping Stones (Grange) Ltd, based in Stoke-on-Trent, has acquired The Griffin Nursery in Bootle, Merseyside, from Maitland Nurseries Ltd.

Mrs Ali – who also owns Hannah Daycare and Birchfield Nursery in Birmingham – took over the business after it was put on the market by Greater Manchester-headquartered Abacus Day Nursery Sales.

It went up for sale at the end of 2018 – with an asking price of just under £100,000 – after previous owner Geoffery Maitland decided he wanted to retire.

The Griffin Nursery has a reported turnover of £173,460 and was rated as good at its most recent OFSTED inspection.

It has 35 childcare places and 12 members of staff who transferred with the business.

Mrs Ali’s latest acquisition means her portfolio of childcare settings now have the capacity to provide more than 170 full-time childcare places.

Chelsea Melnyk, sales negotiator at Abacus Day Nursery Sales, said: “I am really pleased we were able to secure a rapid sale for our client, which means not only can he get on with his retirement plans but also that parents and children will also be able to continue to access high-quality childcare.
