Manchester Airport: Management to meet Andy Burnham and unions over travel chaos

A statement on the talks is expected to be issued on Wednesday

Queues at Manchester Airport

The management of Manchester Airport are meeting with political leaders and unions after weeks of chaos for travellers.

The "concerning" situation is to be discussed with Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham on Tuesday while union officials are also set to discuss pay and conditions.

The talks come after travellers faced long delays and chaotic scenes in recent weeks, with queues trailing outside terminals to reach check-in and hordes of people waiting to get through security and to pick up luggage.

Piles of suitcases have been left in terminals after travellers abandoned the wait to reclaim their baggage and instead left for home, the PA news agency reports.

The airport, along with much of the aviation industry, has struggled to recruit staff made redundant after the pandemic shutdown airports and travel.

As the Easter getaway increases travel, similar problems have hit other airports including Heathrow and Birmingham.

John O'Neill, North West regional industrial officer for Unite, said later on Tuesday union officials will be meeting management at Manchester Airport to discuss pay.
