'It was about bringing people with experience into a single place' - meet the man inspired by the George Floyd protests to helping black entrepreneurs get ahead

CJ Lloyd Webley founded The Black Pounds Project in 2020 and has seen a networking and mentoring community grow across the region

CJ Lloyd Webley is a writer who earns his keep working at Birmingham's Rep theatre.

But he was so moved by the protests and marches in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in 2020 that he decided to launch a new project in the city helping black entrepreneurs.

Called The Black Pounds Project, it offers mentoring, training and membership packages and has helped kickstart and boost the careers and businesses of burgeoning black entrepreneurs across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.

The project has seen such success in its short life span that 28-year-old CJ is now looking to expand across the region and into other cities with Nottingham his most likely next target and a planned launch in the coming months

"I started it in July 2020 not long after the protests in Birmingham following the death of George Floyd," CJ explained.

"I saw there were people from different walks of life who wanted to do something to support the issues at hand but didn't really know how to, particularly if they weren't from a black or diverse background.

"Sometimes they were shut down before they could even have an opinion or be able to understand some of the issues that were happening.
