Independent restaurant Jamaya crowned Solihull business of the year

Jamaican-themed venue only launched in March but has already won an army of fans

Jamaya was crowned business of the year at the Solihull Chamber Awards

An independent restaurant which only launched last spring has been crowned business of the year at a West Midlands awards.

Jamaya picked up the accolade at the 2019 Solihull Chamber Business Awards last night after being crowned outstanding start-up of the year.

The Jamaican-themed jerk and fried chicken eatery is based in the town's Touchwood shopping centre and had more than 1,000 people subscribed to its newsletter before it even opened in March.

It has also created its own Jamaya £5 banknote-style gift cards and made sauces and marinades exclusively for its restaurant.

The annual awards are organised by the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.

Helen Bates, chief financial officer at the chambers and chairwoman of the judging panel, said: "Our esteemed judges were in awe at Jamaya's achievements as a new business and were in agreement that they were deserving Solihull Business of the Year winners.

"All of the other award winners demonstrated excellence, innovation and initiative to our judges and are stellar examples of the types of businesses that are a part of the Solihull business community."
