A Liverpool student has launched a business aimed at helping surgeons and their patients across the world after being motivated by his relationship with his father as a young boy.
Moises Barbera鈥檚 firm Drill Surgeries is aimed at reducing the impact of X-ray radiation on medical staff and patients during surgeries, using specific tools professionals need to perform safer and more efficient surgeries worldwide.
Mr Barbera, who moved from Spain to England to study a Master鈥檚 in Physics at the University of Liverpool, said he would 鈥渘ever have imagined鈥 he would be the CEO and founder of a MedTech start-up with a 鈥渧ision to impact the whole world鈥.
Mr Barbera, 20, said: 鈥淚 remember when I was five years old, my dad, who鈥檚 worked in the medical sector for 30 years now, would arrive home so late due to the surgeries he had to assist with getting delayed and not being performed efficiently enough, that he would find me asleep on the couch waiting for him.
鈥淎t the time I felt so lonely and sad, but I鈥檓 pleased that I am now in a position to help those medical sector experts, who work so hard for us, to return home to their families at the time they promised.鈥
Mr Barbera said it was thanks to the opportunities Liverpool gives young entrepreneurs, as well as his studies on radiation and interest in making healthcare more efficient, he launched the enterprise.
Another aim of Drill Surgeries is to make welding broken bones - one of the most common surgeries worldwide - safer, improving accuracy while reducing time and X-ray radiation by over 50%.

The common surgery is performed around 10 times a week at most hospitals worldwide, Drill Surgeries is developing a new medical device using modern technologies that will substitute the 鈥渋nefficient methods鈥 used for decades, which lead to constant delays, Mr Barbera added..
Dr Javier Coloma of Hospital Arnau de Villanova in Valencia, Spain, who is co-founder of Drill Surgeries, said he has experienced struggles on this kind of surgery for years, and asked Moises to create an鈥 international collaboration鈥 between Spain and the 海角视频.
After recently winning the Enterprise Fund competition, Drill Surgeries has now expanded the awareness of their work to the Northern Health Science Alliance in the 海角视频, two more hospitals in Spain, and other international organisations.
Moises added: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not easy to improve how healthcare works, but the support we鈥檝e received in Liverpool City Region has been fundamental to the businesses growth. I actually feel like this is my second home.鈥
The start-up鈥檚 research and development are now being undertaken within Sensor City, the innovation hub which provides small and medium size enterprises with the chance to accelerate progress through access to high end technology laboratories and engineers, as well as collaboration opportunities to develop prototypes.
Mr Barbera has also been selected from over 1,000 candidates to represent the University of Liverpool in the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards 2019.
