One in five people in the East Midlands is in a low-paying job.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show 20% of people in the East Midlands are currently in a low-paid role based on their hourly wage.

This was the second highest proportion in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, although it has dropped from a third of people (33%) in 2000.

Low pay is defined as being two-thirds of the average hourly wage. In 2019, the average hourly wage is £13.27 - so low-pay employees are those earning below two-thirds of £13.27, or £8.85 an hour.

There were also an estimated 35,000 people in the East Midlands who are being paid less than the National Minimum Wage (NMW) or National Living Wage (NLW).

That was down from 38,000 in 2018, and up from 32,000 in 2017.

Across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, the proportion of jobs where the hourly wage was low fell to 16% in 2019, the lowest since the data series began in 1997.

The proportion of jobs that were low-paid had been steady at around 22% until 2013, when numbers began to fall rapidly.
