Funding pulled for Midlands Engine after a decade

Body was set up to support and promote economic prosperity across the region

An organisation set up to promote businesses and economic prosperity across the Midlands is to be shut down.

Midlands Engine was launched in 2015 with the aim of bringing together businesses, public sector, university and other local organisations to promote a region which is home to 11 million people.

But since launching, some of its functions have been taken over by directly elected mayors who came into force in the West Midlands in 2017 and the East Midlands last year.

Midlands Engine has confirmed that government funding for the programme will end on March 31.

In a statement, it said: "As a result, we will now be working to conclude our programmes and ensure that the legacy of our work in region-wide collaboration endures.

"For over a decade, the Midlands Engine Partnership has brought together local government stakeholders, business leaders, our region's universities and other partners to attract investment, drive regional growth and amplify the Midlands' voice on the national stage.

"We are immensely proud of what we have achieved together and remain committed to ensuring that our collective efforts continue to benefit the region in the years ahead.
