Former global fashion stylist launches hometown's first carbon zero shop

After the birth of her daughter Gemma Lewis has embarked on a mission to not only reduce her own carbon footprint but also that of the town she grew up in South Wales

Gemma Lewis started her zero waste shop out of a trailer before taking on a bricks and mortar unit just before the first lockdown

They always say you life changes when you have a child, and this was definitely the case for Gemma Lewis.

Gemma had spent the past 15 years in the fashion industry, jetting around the world and help sell clothes globally.

All this meant the 39-year-old had been building up quite a carbon footprint, and this was something that became a great cause for concern after the birth of her daughter, Cosy.

It initially started with a zero waste shop but has progressed to looking to shape the future of her hometown with the group A Voice for the Future-Porthcawl.

"After graduating from University I happily worked in fashion in London for 15 years," Gemma explains.

"It was a super exciting time. I started in Asos right at it's conception, when there were just 40 of us in the office. Quickly got promoted to manager at the peak on online retail and in the 4 years I was there we went for 40-over a thousand employers. It was a very buzzy fun environment."

Gemma's shop on Porthcawl stayed open during the pandemic

Gemma left Asos for Selfridges, working as an online styling manager where she helped grow their online department. Three years later she was off to Farfetch, the British-Portuguese online luxury fashion retail platform.

"This was an incredible job," she says.
