Film production company Brookstreet Pictures, set up by Trevor Matthews the son of Welsh tech billionaire Sir Terry Matthews, is being tipped for Oscar success for its co-produced film The Brutalist.

The cinematic historical drama explores themes of ambition, identity and the ‘American dream’ in the journey of an Hungarian architect who emigrates to post-war America.

Since its release it has garnered industry acclaim, which was recognised at the recent 2025 Golden Globes in Hollywood where it picked up the best film drama, best male actor (Adrien Brody) and best director (Brady Corbert) awards. Success at the Golden Globes is often a stepping stone for Oscar nomination by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Also starring Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce, The Brutalist premiered at the Venice International Film Festival last September. It was released in the United States in December and in º£½ÇÊÓƵ this month.

It has also been nominated in a number of categories in the Bafta Film Awards.

Following its triumph, at the Golden Globes, Vanity Fair is tipping it to be nominated in a number of Oscar categories, including for best picture, alongside the likes of Conclave and A Complete Unknown, and best actor and director. The nominations for the Oscars, which will be held in March, will be revealed next week. If nominated some critics believe the film is well placed for Oscar success.

Trevor, the youngest son of Sir Terry, grew up in Canada before moving to the US to pursue his career as an actor and producer. He regularly visits family in Wales and is hoping the country’s growing reputation in the movie industry will make it a future filming location for Brookstreet Pictures projects. The company’s HQ is in Los Angeles but also has a office in Wales based at the Celtic Manor Resort in . Its name is derived from the road in Abercarn where his father used to play as a child before emigrating to Canada and making his fortune in telecommunications and technology.

Having graduated from the New York Film Academy, Trevor founded Brookstreet Pictures in 2004 and has worked with actors including Bruce Willis, Michael Keaton, Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain.
