A long-established family bakery in Gateshead has been sold to another North East firm.

Barry’s Home Bakery is a wholesale and retail bakery business which has three shops in Gateshead.

It was set up in 1957 by pastry chef Harry Nickerson and his wife June after a trip home to Tyneside showed him the opportunity to open his own bakery

The family-run business was put on the market due to retirement and attracted interest from a wide range of potential buyers.

It has been acquired by Northumberland-based Penny Petroleum, which started as a single petrol forecourt in Powburn and has grown to encompass 90 sites and more than 1,100 workers around the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

Vicky Hennessy, from Penny Petroleum, said: “We are delighted to have purchased Barry’s Bakery.

“It is a fantastic addition to Penny on the Move.

“As a family-run business with strong roots in the North East, Barry’s Bakery aligns perfectly with our values. We’re excited to explore how the bakery can work in synergy with our existing operations and contribute to our continued growth.”
