Overseas sales of West Midlands food and drink totalled more than £810 million in 2018/19, according to new research.

Figures released by HM Revenue & Customs for the year ending March 2019 suggested exports in the sector had risen by £15.5 million year on year.

Exports of West Midlands-produced drinks saw the highest growth, rising 25 per cent over the year to £79 million while Japan proved to be a bumper market with a 12 per cent increase in food and drinks sales.

Ian Harrison, head of West Midlands exports at the Department for International Trade, said: "Famous for its quality and provenance, º£½ÇÊÓƵ produce is held in high regard right across the globe.

"In the first three months of 2019, the nation's food and drink exports were valued at £5.7 billion.

"With º£½ÇÊÓƵ produce taking centre stage in multiple international markets and opportunity particularly growing in Japan, as well as the US and China, now's the time for West Midlands businesses to step into the spotlight and put their goods on the table.

"If businesses across the West Midlands are cracking markets on every continent, there's no reason why others can't savour the same success."
