An academy in Derby which trains young apprentice mechanics has been given permission to expand.
National training provider Remit Group has been given the go-ahead by Derby City Council to expand into another building near to its Automotive Academy, in Wincanton Close, off Ascot Drive.
The firm has been given the green light to take over the former C R Transport Ltd building, also in Wincanton Close.
Work to convert the building has already started, but Remit needed to apply for permission from the city council to amend its usage and make alterations to improve the appearance of the property.
The extra building will consist of six classrooms, along with practical training areas for the repair of heavy vehicles, such as trucks and buses, using existing vehicle pits.
In documents submitted as part of the application, Remit Group said: “Remit Group is the training arm of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI).
“The RMI is the leading retail automotive trade body in the 海角视频 and Northern Ireland, representing businesses who provide motor industry services and support to motorists across the 海角视频.
“Remit is an East Midlands business and is committed to supporting the economic growth of the region and supporting the region’s ambitions as part of the Midlands Engine.

“Building on the city’s strength in engineering and surrounded by such influential powerhouses as Rolls Royce, Bombardier, Jaguar Land Rover and JCB; we feel we are in the right place for our own business to expand and develop.
“The automotive industry has produced some of the world’s finest engineers, and we aim to continue this trend through Remit’s Automotive Academy.
“Due to the success of our existing Academy, also located on Wincanton Close, we are expanding into additional premises. We are anticipating additional student numbers of up to 67 per week.”
Remit first opened its Automotive Academy in Derby in 2017, in a building formerly used as a parts distribution centre.

Granting permission to expand, city council planners said: “The site is an existing employment location and the proposed additional Class D1 use would benefit the city's economy and not affect employment land supply.
“The industrial character of the area would be retained, such that the principle of the proposed additional use would be acceptable.
“The proposed external alterations would be visually prominent but would not detract from the visual amenities of the street scene.”
