Exeter firm wins £4.5m contract to overhaul hospital's electrics

EX2 Electrical will carry out two-year project to upgrade the main electrical infrastructure at one of the South West's biggest hospitals

The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital

An Exeter electrical contractor has won a £4.5million two-year contract to upgrade the electrics at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

EX2 Electrical, based at Splatford Barton, has been chosen to deliver the major upgrade to the main electrical infrastructure. The project involves the reinforcement of the existing high voltage (HV), low voltage (LV) and standby generation infrastructure to the hospital to provide additional capacity and provide a more resilient electrical distribution network.

The works include the provision of four 2,000kVA HV transformers, three 2,000kVA generators, four 3,200a switchboard and two 6,300a generator switchboards, HV and LV cabling, busbar trunking and specialist controls systems.

EX2 as a principal contractor will also oversee the construction of new switchrooms and enabling works to facilitate the upgrade.

EX2 Electrical will use3D modelling on the project to upgrade the electrics at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital

Due to the challenging and complex nature of the project, an experienced contractor that could manage both the technical complexity and logistics of such a large scale project whilst ensuring that hospital operations are unaffected was required.

EX2 Electrical has a proven track record of working within the healthcare sector. Drawing on its previous experience and technical capability, EX2 will ensure the work, which will be phased over two years, will be completed without impacting on site operations.

This will be achieved by working collaboratively with the trust’s design team and EX2’s specialist supply chain to ensure that there is no disruption throughout the timeline of the project.

EX2 Electrical will utilise 3D modelling on the project to ensure that works are fully coordinated within the limitations of the existing building. Onsite, work has already commenced with all current coronavirus restrictions being adhered to.
