Digbeth tech firm signs up Michael Jackson's guitarist for online lessons

New start-up company launches websites offering online music tutorials with artists who boast tours with Michael Jackson and Ellie Goulding on their CVs

Guitarist Chris Ketley, on stage with Ellie Goulding at Wireless in 2014, is working with Digbeth firm LessonWith

A start-up tech company in is offering online music lessons with instructors who have worked with stars such as Michael Jackson and Ellie Goulding.

Founded by Doug Ward, LessonWith enables budding musicians to connect with instructors for a private, one-to-one music lesson via the website's live-streaming function.

All users need is a webcam and a reliable internet connection.

Among the instructors who have signed up are Madonna's guitar teacher Monte Pittman, Jennifer Batten, who worked with Jeff Beck and Michael Jackson for over a decade, and Ellie Goulding's guitarist Chris Ketley.

Mr Ward is a graduate of Conservatoire and began working as tour manager for Cream drummer Ginger Baker while studying.

While on tour, Mr Ward said he saw an opportunity to bring together the worlds of education and music as he knew that conservatoires and universities were always looking to book masterclasses with world-class musicians.

He said he then started using his contacts to set up such sessions, primarily in the US, and the idea for LessonWith grew from there.

Mr Ward said: "It's a very exciting time. Until now, there was absolutely no way the public could get in touch with these musicians.
