Cornwall-based breast prosthesis start-up secures £105k investment

Calstock's Boost Innovations wins financial backing just 16 months after launching

Cornwall's Boost Innovations has designed an innovative form of breast prosthesis

A Cornwall-based breast prosthesis company has secured a £105,000 investment from the British Design Fund.

Boost Innovations, based in Calstock, has designed to boost confidence and aid comfort and usability.

The start-up was founded by friends and colleagues Sam Jackman and Rosie Brave in 2018, after seeing the many issues Ms Jackman’s mum experienced using a breast form following treatment for breast cancer.

Working closely with users, Boost reimagined the design of the breast form. Unlike traditional prosthesis, Boost’s products are light, comfortable and breathable. They are colourful and decorative – a far cry from the “chicken fillet'' feel and appearance of existing prosthetics.

The breast forms are also designed to remain secure when used within post-surgery underwear and can be used for swimming and exercising, aiding accessibility.

Boost Innovations has now won the support of the British Design Fund (BDF), which works with ambitious British product start-ups which are ready to scale-up and build thriving stand-out businesses.

Alongside capital investment, BDF provides expert mentoring to support such companies to accelerate their growth plans. Its partners include the Design Council and the Central Research Laboratory.

Ms Jackman said: “Following surgery for breast cancer, my mum was given a breast prosthesis to wear. It was hot, it made her sweaty and was uncomfortable against her scar.
