One of the country’s largest container firms has announced a £4.5m site acquisition that expands its presence on the Manchester Ship Canal.

Universal Container Service Ltd, the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s largest independently-owned, family-run container company, has acquired the 3.78-acre site to create a combined 7.28-acre integrated hub in Irlam, Salford.

The new plot directly connect to the firm’s existing port facility and significantly boosts its operational capacity at a time of rising demand for container-based solutions.

Universal said the expansion would create dozens of new jobs, including apprenticeships. It is set to create a container showroom and a workshop and parts hub to support custom builds, as well as expanding its self-storage business with up to 600 new units.

Founded in 1990, Universal Container Services has three depots around the country. It designs, modifies and supplies containers for a range of uses, including modular cafés, offices, and retail spaces. The company handles all work in-house and owns all of the land it operates on.

Managing director George Woolley said: “Acquiring this land is the final piece of the puzzle, cementing our family business’s 40+ year legacy in Irlam, Manchester. Spanning over seven acres along the iconic Manchester Canal with its own berth, it will position Universal as an industry powerhouse, creating jobs and developing innovative products for our modern world.”
