A construction company which refurbished hospital wards during the worst of the Covid pandemic has become the latest firm to move into Plymouth Science Park.

After a successful year of business growth, Bates Development Services Ltd (BDS) has joined the thriving business community at the park, in north Plymouth.

Founded in 2018 by experienced quantity surveyor and project manager Tom Bates, BDS specialises in bespoke construction consultancy within the health, education, commercial and residential sectors.

BDS, which has relocated from the Widewell area of the city, played an important role in Plymouth’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and supported the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust and Derriford Hospital during periods of extreme pressure by refurbishing wards to enable extra capacity for critical care and acute dependency patients.

The move to the Science Park provides BDS with a decisive step forward and an increased regional presence to promote further growth within a community of synergetic businesses and support services already based at the park.

Tom Bates, BDS managing director, said: “I am delighted to have joined the network of businesses at Plymouth Science Park and to become a part of their supportive and thriving community.

“The whole team at the park have been so welcoming, and the environment at the Park is truly geared towards realising our business goals.”

Fay Davies, business development manager at Plymouth Science Park said: “We work closely the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, and are delighted to welcome Bates to the park so that they can continue to provide bespoke support to our neighbour at the Hospital, and other laboratory based businesses, particularly as they deal with the demands brought about by Covid.”
