Concerns over affordability and charging are preventing drivers from making the switch to electric cars, according to new research from Auto Trader.

The Manchester-headquartered company has found that only 47% of drivers think EVs will fit in with their lifestyle because of worries over charging points, while 56% consider them too expensive, despite used-EV prices declining by 23%.

After the publication of Auto Trader's Road to 2030, commercial director Ian Plummer has called for ministers to end the "charging injustice" with VAT cuts to tackle more expensive public charging.

Auto Trader's report also reveals a 23% slide in used EV prices over the past 12 months.

Mr Plummer said: "There is still much more work to be done to achieve a mass transition to electric vehicles before the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel models and ensure no driver is left behind.

"Support from the tax system to put the used EV market on a more sustainable footing is vital for the sustainability of the entire EV market and our chances of successfully transitioning to EVs by 2030.

"Consumers are still worried about affordability and charging, which is why we need a clear statement of intent from the government. Penalising drivers who have to charge in public with higher VAT is simply unfair: we need to end this charging injustice.
