The managing director of South West chamber of commerce Business West is stepping down after three decades.

Phil Smith, who has steered the organisation through recessions, Brexit and the Covid pandemic, will retire in spring next year.

It is understood the chamber is now looking for a new chief executive, with interviews taking place in October and November.

Under Mr Smith’s leadership, Business West has focused on driving long-term prosperity for businesses and the region.

The organisation is one of the largest chamber networks in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, coving Bath, Bristol, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

His work over the last 30 years includes building business communities, shaping partnerships and helping to secure public and private investment, Business West said.

“It has been a fascinating experience," said Mr Smith. "I’ve enjoyed playing my role in the exciting and ever-changing business landscape.

"I have worked with so many talented individuals in this role; people who are genuinely passionate about making our region a great place to live, learn and work.
