A business incubation centre set up by the University of Derby to nurture new firms involved in the creative industries is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Since it was launched in 1999, Banks Mill Studios, in Bridge Street, has supported almost 400 businesses, around a third of which were launched by university graduates.

The building, which was opened by Dr Michael Porter, a renowned º£½ÇÊÓƵ and international artist, provides space and support for businesses in Derby who are involved in the creative industries. Today, the building now supports 72 tenants and members.

Now, to mark its 20th anniversary, Banks Mills Studios will host an open studios event, where visitors can view the work of more than 50 different artists, designers, makers and creative services providers.

Karen Holland, co-ordinator at Banks Mill, said: “At the event you can find out how our artists create their unique designs and products as well as buy original work, something that can’t be experienced on the high street.

“You can also meet one of our creative service businesses to discuss how they can work with you. To keep our youngest visitors engaged we also have an arts trail for them to follow too.”

Among the artists due to exhibit at the event is Magdalena Aron, who recently moved into Banks Mill running Minoan Mosaic Studio.
