Business and civic leaders in Birmingham have written to Chancellor Rishi Sunak to ask for more support for companies in the city.

The letter adds to a lengthy list of requests outlined last month before a national lockdown for England had been confirmed and which starts today.

This latest letter has been signed by representatives from Birmingham City Council, Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and MPs among others.

The additional support measures being requested include support for the hardest hit sectors including hospitality, visitor economy and live events, enhancement of Self-Employed Income Support Scheme and wider approaches to reducing pressures on businesses such as tax credits and further VAT reductions.

City council leader Ian Ward said: "Following consultation with local businesses and key stakeholders, it is clear that further support is required to help Birmingham businesses survive over the winter months and be in a more position to run when restrictions ease.

"This is vital if we are to protect jobs, livelihoods and communities.

"We are keen to make sure we are doing everything we can to support businesses with the needed support from government to prepare for winter."
