Business births in Wales exceed deaths show new ONS data

The percentage of single site firms in Wales reporting a rise in revenues was also the highest of any º£½ÇÊÓÆµ nation or region

The number of business births in Wales exceeded deaths in the first quarter of this year but only just, shows new figures from the ONS.

In Q1 the number of businesses created in Wales was 2,890, up 860 on Q4 of 2024 and 190 on the year. There were 2,860 business deaths, up 460 on the previous quarter, but 2024 but down 100 on the year.

For the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ as a whole there were 89,515 business birth, a rise of 2.8% on Q1 2024.

The number of businesses removed from the Inter-Department Business Registrar, was 83,425, some 4.4% lower than the number of closures a year earlier.

There was an increase in creations in 12 out of 16 main industrial groups in Q1 compared with Q1 2024, with the most significant rise coming from the retail industry.

There was a decrease in the number of closures in 6 out of 16 main industrial groups the most significant fall came from the business administration and support services industry.

Other data from the ONS shows that the number of companies in Wales operating from single sites reporting a rise in revenues in March on February, was the highest of any º£½ÇÊÓÆµ nation or region.

The proportion of firms questioned saying that revenues improved in March was 19% in Wales, compared to 18% for the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ as whole. The lowest percentage was in the north west of England at 16%.
