Building firm paying staff £750 bonus to help them pay for rising energy and petrol bills

More than 60 staff at Emerys Timber and Builders Merchants will receive the 'energy supplement' in this month's pay packet

James Hipkins

More than 60 workers at a Staffordshire building firm will get an extra £750 in their pay packets this month – to help tackle the rising energy costs.

Emerys Timber and Builders Merchants, which has branches in Stoke-on-Trent and Telford, says it wants to alleviate financial concerns with the bonus 'energy supplement'.

And the money is not restricted to those who pay bills as young apprentices who live at home with their parents will also be handed the cash to support their family.

The move comes amid a cost of living crisis as families across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ battle huge rises in energy and petrol prices.

James Hipkins, managing director at Emerys, said: "The news is a daily topic of conversation, whether it is what's happening in Ukraine or the fear of increased fuel prices, staff who were putting £60 in their tank to fill up are now putting in £80.

"From April, programs like Martin Lewis are forecasting big increases in fuel surges and energy and electric. It puts people who are living on normal wages into a bit of a 'fear factor'."

James – who hopes other companies will follow suit – added: "We looked at this back in November/December when we were looking at pay rises and thought we need to give people a decent rise this year because of inflation.
