Birmingham business review of the year - Tall towers and visions for a tourism destination

Making the news in the second quarter were a pair of high-rise projects destined to shape the city's skyline, a reservoir revamp and major transport schemes

Phase two of Exchange Square will contain a 36-storey tower

Our review of Birmingham's business news in 2019 moves into the spring and the second quarter when tall buildings and reservoir regeneration made the headlines.

Also generating the news this period were manufacturing and engineering group GKN and its plans to close a factory alongside several transport initiatives.

One of the biggest stories - literally - was the news that the second phase of the city centre Exchange Square development could reach 34 storeys.

Designs were unveiled by Nikal in April for two more buildings on the site of the old Masshouse Circus island which would see a new Premier Inn hotel, bar and a mammoth apartment block constructed.

By the time planning permission was awarded in December, the residential element had grown by a further two storeys.

Birmingham Business - Review of the Year 2019

Not wishing to be outdone, just a week later an even bigger project was unveiled by Birmingham-based developer Court Collaboration.

Its vision for a 51-storey tower called One Eastside opposite the Exchange Square site even raised concerns at Birmingham Airport, such was its height.

It also received the green light in December and, if built as planned, will supersede Birmingham's BT Tower as the city's tallest structure.
