Northern Ireland renewables developer Strategic Power Projects (SPP) has teamed up with a London asset manager Gresham House New Energy to help it roll out solar and battery assets throughout the island of Ireland.

SPP said it has site locations secured close to major electricity grid infrastructure hubs for both new build utility scale solar PV and battery energy storage totalling 1 gigawatts.

Planning approval has already been secured for a number of sites, one of which is set to become the largest hybrid renewable projects on the island of Ireland.

The agreement will provide Gresham House with exclusivity to acquire the utility-scale solar and battery assets once they are fully consented. Development activities will be undertaken by SPP, with Gresham house offering support based on its experience as a relative ‘first mover’ investor in both solar and BESS asset classes.

Once projects are fully consented, the group will tender for construction and operational phase services, with funds under the management of Gresham House intending to own the assets for their full operational lives.

SPP is headed by planning and renewables veteran Paul Carson.

“Partnering with Gresham House allows us to build a powerful combination of funding, knowledge and experience in developing the highest quality assets,” he said. “These are exciting yet critical times for renewable energy in Northern Ireland.

“We are encouraged that the Department for the Economy (DfE) and Department for Infrastructure DfI are currently reviewing their policies for New Energy and Planning for Renewables and we look forward to the consultation outcome.
