10 questions for Lucy Craig of Craig Healthcare

The founder of the North East dementia care specialist answers our questions

Lucy Craig is founder and managing director of dementia care specialists, Craig Healthcare. The business has provided dementia care for more than 20 years and has three homes within the North East: Cramlington House in Northumberland, and West Farm Care Centre and Holywell House on Tyneside.

What was your first job, and how much did it pay? My first job was a Saturday job at my uncle’s hairdressing salon in Newcastle. I worked on the reception from 8am to 6pm and for £5 per day. I loved it as I got to meet and chat to lots of people which I have always really enjoyed.

What is the best advice or support you’ve been given in business? To be firm but fair and remain true to yourself. To have the confidence to believe in myself and what I do. Oh and one other thing… I had the privilege of playing a round of golf with Gary Player many years ago. I asked how he arrive at the top his game. He said: ‘The more I practise, the better I get!’

What are the main changes you’ve seen in your business/sector, and what are the challenges you’re facing? Covid remains a huge issue, and the impact is still being felt. Our challenges come from the fact that care is considered to be a low paid, second-rate job when it is actually the most rewarding career I have ever pursued.

To care for the people who are essentially forgotten in our society is a privilege and an honour. Central Government have talked for years about investing in the care sector however so far, it has not happened. The Covid inquiry was set up to learn the lessons of Covid however I have seen nothing purposeful yet that impacts this sector.

What would your dream job be? Honestly, the one I have now.

What advice would you give to someone starting out a career in your sector? Working in care is a passion and a vocation. If you are not prepared to compromise yourself for the people you care for then don’t do it. If you have a huge heart and you want to make a difference, then this is a wonderful industry to work in.

What makes the North East a good place to do business? The North East is a welcoming and inclusive environment to work in. The people you meet here, in the business world, are some of the kindest and most talented in the world. It does not matter what you do or how you do it, you are always made to feel welcome and supported.
