Work starts on £5m Greater Manchester Hindu temple after Recom Solutions appointed main contractor

It's being funded through donations from the local community as well as supporters nationwide and internationally

How the new Hindu temple in Oldham will look

Works have begun on a £5m Hindu temple in Greater Manchester after a Salford Quays-based firm was selected as main contractor.

Shree Swaminarayan Temple has appointed Recom Solutions as the main contractor to build its new facility on Copsterhill Road, with the project due for completion in 2022.

According to the developer, the building's design will be a "blend of modern and traditional features", and will be situated on a space previously occupied by a housing association depot.

Once complete, operations will switch from the current Shree Swaminarayan Temple on Lee Street, which opened in 1977.

The new temple is being funded through donations from the local community as well as supporters nationwide and internationally.

This week, around 100 people, including members of the community, senior temple leaders, design team personnel and contractors, attended a ground-breaking ceremony to bless the start of the scheme on Copsterhill Road.

Suresh Gorasia, from the temple, said: “Thanks to the generous support we have received from the local community and our parent body, we can now realise our dream for the new temple.

“The temple lies at the heart of our community. For many, it is an extension of their home, a place for worship, culture, socialising and recreation.
