Work due to start 'immediately' on six-story Plymouth waterfront hotel

Lithuanian construction firm Mitnija wins contract for new Moxy Hotel in Millbay area of Britain's Ocean City

How the Moxy Hotel could look when built in Plymouth

The construction of a six-storey hotel on Plymouth’s waterfront is due to start “immediately” following the appointment of the company that will oversee the build.

Mitnija, one of Lithuania’s largest construction firms, has secured the design and build contract for a new Moxy Hotel in Millbay, just yards from the water’s edge.

And the firm said the location, on the car park of the Plymouth Pavilions event centre, will pose a challenge with specialist teams and equipment needed to sink foundations on a plot which is only just above sea level.

It will also mean road closures in the Millbay area, at some point, on a carefully organised build, but it will mean more than 40 subcontractors and suppliers will be employed on the project.

This is the second Moxy Hotel in the United Kingdom to be built by Mitnija for the international real estate developer Vastint Hospitality. The first is currently being completed in Milton Keynes.

The six-story, 5,700sq m, will feature 200 rooms, common areas and underground parking. It has permission for a restaurant and bar. Mitnija said it will begin construction “immediately” and complete the hotel in June 2022.

It will form part of the city council’s ambitious £2.98million Millbay Boulevard scheme to create a link between the city centre and the waterfront.

Vastint acquired the car park land from ex-Plymouth Argyle chairman James Brent’s Natatomisam company in early 2018. The new Moxy Hotel Plymouth will be the city’s third new hotel since 2020, with new Oyo and Premier branded buildings now completed in the city centre.
