League One club Wigan Athletic have agreed to be taken over by a consortium led by Bahraini businessman Abdulrahman Al-Jasmi.

The move, which is dependent on English Football League approval, comes after the financially troubled first entered administration in July 2020.

It is hoped that the deal will be completed by the end of the month.

The Latics' financial problems led to their relegation from the Championship last season.

The proposed sale to Phoenix 2021 Ltd, owned by Al-Jasmi, comes after a deal with a Spanish consortium collapsed at the start of January, after it was initially blocked by the EFL.

Talal Al-Hammad, who is set to come in as chairman, said: "I am delighted that we have been successful in our negotiations with the administrators and that we are now able to help restore pride and belief with everyone associated with the club.

"To Latics fans everywhere, we can only guess at the amount of hurt and distress you have felt since the club entered administration and it is now our focus to stabilise its future and to illustrate why we believe we are the best ownership group for the club.

"We know that we will have to earn your trust through actions rather than words.
