Welsh Government Covid rules update today as firms hold breath in run up to Christmas

First Minister Mark Drakeford will set-out any changes to restrictions as pleas are made for more business support

Welsh Coronavirus Headlines December 22 - New restrictions announced today, emergency TfW timetable and more

Today is set to be a crunch day for businesses with Welsh Government due to hold its last major Covid update before Christmas and calls made to ensure firms can survive the winter.

The hospitality and leisure sectors have been hit in recent weeks by cancellations and added restrictions due to fears about the Omicron variant - while the threat of more rules or even another lockdown has put everyone on edge.

Nightclubs are set to shut from December 27 while sport moves behind closed doors on Boxing Day.

It has been tipped that more rules could also come in post-Christmas with table service and the rule of six touted as possible measures if First Minister Mark Drakeford picks more restrictions from Alert Level 2.

He is holding a Covid briefing today at 12.15pm.

This all comes as Omicron has led to a surge in cases in London and Scotland and is starting to take off in Wales as cases of the highly transmissable variant double every two to three days - although currently Covid hospitalisations are less than a quarter of those at the same time a year ago.

Welsh Government has warned more measures are likely and has introduced a £60m funding pot to assist those businesses already set for a hit after Boxing Day.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has been under pressure in England to support sectors hit by the cancellation crisis and yesterday announced a £1bn fund to help businesses - with cash grants of up to £6,000 per premises.
